Abstract

The child in this case study had troubles in expressing himself and taking initiative because of failure to accomplish his developmental tasks. Through play therapy, he was supported to express his thoughts and feelings confidently as well as re-experience a trustful relationship with his therapist. Together with the play therapy, parent training sessions led by another therapist helped his parents to understand his disturbance and learn appropriate parenting skills, encouraging the parents to play an important role in bringing up their child. Forty sessions of the play therapy consisted of game play therapy and sand play therapy. The increase of scores in overall areas of his K-WISC-III test, especially the high score of vocabulary, demonstrated effectiveness of the therapy. However, the lack of expressing his feelings was still left as a limitation of the therapy.
